Patsy Martin and Katy Davis of Wellington joined Earlene Flippen and Dorris Windom to win the Greenbelt Women’s Round Robin at the Country Club. Wellington four under par for 18 holes led the field of 11 teams with 47 players from Clarendon, Childress, Memphis, Canadian, Shamrock, and Wellington.
The Coltingsworth 4 H range evaluation team will compete at the state level during the annual 4 H Roundup in College Station. Contest dates are June 10 11 and 12. Members Rene Del Bosque Shaun Coleman Spencer Seal and Craig Brown from Samnorwood won the Panhandle District and Area range contests earlier this spring under coach Jimmy Brown.
Leader Readers R L Campbell and a list of Amarillo and West Texas participants join in judging four range sites. Contestants will also identify grasses forbs and brush in each plot with plant identification. Reeves and Brown accompany the boys to College Station for the event.
Amber Devoss of Wellington won a balloon release contest held March 20. Three students received letters from finders, with Amber's balloon traveling about 100 miles to Davidson Oklahoma. Jessie Cantu and Jenifer Long also had balloons found in Chillicothe, about 74 miles away. The Weekly Reader sponsored the event, with the school awarded a $500 prize for the overall winner.
Jimmy Jennings, owner of Video Stop, will open a third franchise in Wellington at 903 West Avenue around June 15. The store will sell tapes, machines, cameras, and provide service, with 300 tapes and 8 machines to start, operating daily 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. except Sundays. Jennings also runs shops in Pampa and Clarendon and is a member of the American Video Association.
The 1986 Greenbelt Junior Golf Association schedules a Tuesday start with seven towns within 60 miles of Childress competing, culminating in the August 5 championship hosted by Childress. Participants ages 10 to 17 must complete a three hour etiquette and rules course. 13 locals have signed up so far.
The swimming pool at the Wellington Country Club opens to members and families with hours from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. It is closed on Mondays. No one under 12 may swim alone.
Rainy Monday night did not stop Wellington Mens Softball League play. Old Timers beat Owens Supply 12 to 6 with Dicky Johnson the winning pitcher, while Players defeated the Bachelors 16 to 3 as James Thomas got the win. Wellington women edged Britt's Broads 11 to 9 with Paula Nash homering and Louise Powell the winning pitcher. C and H Pharmacy sponsors the local girls team.
