Spaniards Route to Santa Fe Through Panhandle Wind Storms
In 1808 Captain Franchisco Amangual led 200 men from San Antonio toward Santa Fe along the caprock through the Panhandle. They faced gully crossings, water shortages, and a fierce wind storm near Amarillo Creek. They learned it was safer to travel south of the Canadian River, with a Santa Fe victory parade marking their arrival.
