First teacher Emma Cocke recalls Collingsworth origins
In April 1889 Emma Cocke taught the county’s first school in The Flat near Fresno, arriving with her father and neighbors after a 15 day wagon trek from Denton. She recalls thirteen pupils, rustic classrooms, rattlesnakes, and the founding days of Wellington’s education as Collingsworth County formed.
