150 Years of Texas Education Highlighted by Wellington Leader

The Wellington Leader and Collingsworth County Museum mark Texas public education’s 150th anniversary and Collingsworth County’s 100 years, tracing the system from 1854 Permanent School Fund to ongoing struggles with segregation, funding, and reform. Elisha M. Pease urged a public school fund in 1853.

A trailer home fire on East Avenue killed seven year old Jose Alberto Rodriguez and injured a woman and child who were airlifted to Lubbock for smoke inhalation treatment. The fire’s cause is under investigation. A second crash near Lela killed 62-year-old Robert Douglas Harris after a Ford Malibu ran off a grassy ditch and overcorrected.
