Collingsworth General Hospital District may avoid a tax increase this year if county valuations stay level after farm exemptions and veterans relief. Gains from oil and gas properties could offset losses, and the hospital board agreed at its August 17 meeting that a rate hike may not be needed. Final decision pending San HOSPITAL page 2.
County Judge Zock Thomas announces the Salvation Army Service Unit fund drive opens Thursday September 9 in Wellington with Tommy Hudson as drive chairman. The effort will be led by a volunteer board including Billy Moseley and others to aid local and non resident needs with food shelter clothing utilities medicines and school supplies.
Rockets scrimmage Lefors Pirates in a preseason tilt set for Thursday August 19 at 6 30 p m at Lefors Powell Field. SkyrocketsFeaturing coach James Williams will showcase a large squad including varsity second and junior varsity units in a first outing while Lefors fields 25 players with 12 seniors and 19 lettermen.
Skyrocket Booster Club plans its first organizational meeting on August 24 with new officers to be elected. The group will show Thursday’s Lefors scrimmage film and introduce staff members including Tom Johnson Gano Wilson and head coach James Williams. Dues set at 310 for singles or couples.
Wellington hosts a two day rodeo at the VFW Arena with 8 events including saddle bronc bare back and bull riding plus a new wild cow milking and calf scramble for children. Stock by C and C Rodeo Co. 4 H Horse Club leads the grand entry. doors open Aug 19.
An arthritis seminar titled Ability Not Disability will be held August 21 at 2 00 pm in the Wellington Elementary School Cafeteria with entry via Childress Street. Sponsored by Collingsworth County Family Living Committee Extension Homemakers Clubs and Texas Agricultural Extension Service, it features Dr Robert McNutt of Amarillo Diagnostic Clinic discussing diagnosis treatment and physical therapy. Aimed at guiding people with arthritis or limited mobility, the program includes a film and brochures on labor saving techniques and equipment plus kitchen storage and organizing tips.
Jannon Thomason, an 18 year old Wellington High School graduate, will wear the Collingsworth County banner at the Wheatheart of the Nation pageant Friday in Perryton. She is sponsored by the Collingsworth Chamber of Commerce and competes with a dozen contestants from the Texas panhandle and Oklahoma. The winner earns a $1000 scholarship, with $500 for second and $250 for third. Thomason plans to attend Abilene Christian University and has a background in basketball, tennis, cheerleading, and student leadership.
