Ship News From Wales Accounts Penelope Fleet Losses

A late 18th century ship news report recounts the Penelope brig sailing from Port Antoni on convoy with the Valiant and Ceres. The fleet suffered heavy damage in a gale near lat 30 long 35, with many ships losing masts and crews. Rescue attempts failed as ships like Hector and Ocean arrived at Jamaica, while crews aboard several vessels perished or were saved. Seventeen bodies washed ashore near Whitburn, with a heart wrenching note of a man placing his son on his back to swim ashore before both died.
