Advertisement lists subscription plans for the Confederate Daily Edition tri weekly and three weekly editions each for six months. It states no other terms or longer or shorter periods will be accepted.
Editorials allege Mr Holden betrayed the South, claiming treasonable plans to sever from the Confederacy. Witnesses, letters, and certificates are cited to support accusations, with calls for a judge and jury rather than political maneuvering. Mosby operations disrupt rail lines near Manassas as Union forces drift southward. Richmond reports French agent arrival blocked by Lincoln authorities. Weldon train movements and Yankee prisoners noted.
The Petersburg Express cites reliable enemy lines reports claiming Grant has suffered 75 000 to 90 000 losses across killed wounded prisoners and deserters. Mosby’s men report rear infiltration from Rapidan to Potomac, with many stragglers and fierce resolve to avoid capture. Gold rises in New York as observers doubt Confederate strength, while northern voices claim Grant’s army has suffered ruin and the war may end soon.
The recently closed Legislature enacted a measure to preserve habeas corpus and curb transport of citizens beyond state lines. It tightens penalties for disobeying writs and for transporting individuals by force. The act, read three times and ratified May 28, 1864, also directs officials to seek Confederate authorities for any such detainees. Also, Gen. Whiting is ordered to report to Gen. Lee for active field command.
The Richmond Sentinel reports Johnston’s successful clashes with Sherman in Northern Georgia and recounts Grant’s maneuvers, retreat to the Peninsula, and anticipated grand engagement. It notes Petersburg defense, Bragg’s status, and a heavy cavalry fight near Hawes’ Shop with Wade Hampton’s command, plus prisoner movements and a Valley report from Shenandoah.
The notice states advertising will be inserted at a fixed ratio per square for each insertion. It also mentions marriage notices and obituaries to be charged as advertisements. Job work descriptions will be executed at this office with dispatch, as nearly as possible anywhere in the Southern Confederacy.
A Houston Telegraph correspondent reports engagements near Matagorda and Tupelo. Alabama gunboats driven back after damage, Forrest mobilizes forces with 159 to 200 miles to march, and rumors point to Ohio river campaigning. Citizens urged to aid wounded NC soldiers at Camp Winder with supplies and letters.
