A critique of Mr. Milner Gibson’s Manchester speech and the Globe’s stance on universal suffrage. The piece argues that abstract rights mislead, defends self government with cautious reform, and warns against reopening the 1833 reform debate. In Manchester, Mr. Gibson declared support for perfect freedom of corn trade and immediate repeal of the corn laws. The adjutant-general Sir John Macdonald addressed Prince Albert's Hussars at Brighton calling for unity between Earl Cardigan and officers. He noted Lord Hill would not entertain future complaints and urged moderation and temper in command. Cardigan reacted with visible distress at being reproved before his officers.
An inquest at the Royal Standard and another at the Golden Lion reported two accidental poisonings. Emma Green, five, died after swallowing vitriol mistakenly given to her by a servant. Henry Johnson, seven weeks, died when his mother gave vitriol thinking it Godfrey's cordial. verdicts were accidental death.
