Piratical Attack on the New York Packet Ship in Channel

A New York packet ship the South America captained by Bailey was attacked in the English Channel near the Old Head of Kinsale by a small vessel resembling an English yacht. The assailants fired at close range, striking near the rudder and foreyard, while the crew and passengers were exposed. The attacker hailed in English, claimed York origin, and fled after a brief parley with an English flag displayed on her mizen peak. The incident spurred calls for official inquiry and discussion of possible revenue vessel involvement.
