Soldiers occupy Bingley to quell Chartist unrest
At dawn around seven o'clock about sixty men from the 524 Regiment of Infantry and as many pensioners arrived by special train to Bingley. Troops and Hussars patrolled the town to support civil authorities after a mob rescued two prisoners, then paraded them in the streets. Sixteen men were seized, many power-loom weavers, as ringleaders and others fled. Prisoners were taken to York Castle, while Chartist meetings in Bradford and Leeds yielded no further outbreaks.
