Telegrams report a disastrous collision near Meramec Highlands Missouri on the St Louis and San Francisco line between a G A R excursion train bound for St James and the Valley Railroad accommodation east. Nine dead and twenty wounded, eight fatally, with at least two more bodies buried beneath wreckage. Engines and several cars destroyed.
Readington dispatches detail a stove gas explosion in a kitchen that killed Mrs. Vaughan and her three year old child after a thief used a carpet line and gasoline. The blast set the house ablaze, injuring a farmer and his two children nearby and damaging surrounding property. Other reports recount a woman in Orleans Morgan county burned fleeing sparks from a brush pile, and various local incidents including a Chicago streetcar system dispute, church rector deaths, and dry goods firm collapse.
Nine people are dead and many injured after a head end collision near Valley Park Missouri between a Valley Park accommodation train and the second section of a west bound excursion train carrying 420 G A R members and families. The wreck blocked both engines and derailed all cars. A relief train reached the scene by noon and by 1 pm nine bodies were recovered with at least two more believed buried. Among the dead are engineer Chas Hohl and several excursionists from St Louis. The incident occurred as the excursion train headed to St James for a dedication of a home for aged Union veterans widows.
In Elliott county Kentucky on October 25 three Sparks men went to a Mormon meeting at Bill and Mrs Isom home. After Isom expelled them shots were fired through the door wounding Isom twice in the chest and Mrs Isom in the abdomen. Both injuries are fatal, Sparks fled and have not been captured. Mormons are blamed for the trouble amid strong indignation.
