City Marshal Barry Smith clashed with three Knight brothers Charles Kranik and Josh in Ashley. Charles Knight was shot in the neck and will die while Josh Knight sustained a non dangerous thigh wound. The dispute began earlier when Charles accused J Vaughn, once a bartender for Charles, of starting a fire that destroyed a prominent business block causing $10,600 in losses.
Governor Yates appoints a commission with a $10,000 appropriation to buy Fort Massac site. $3,500 funds the purchase. remainder covers custodian and park establishment. A large park will be created immediately to perpetuate the fort built by Gen. George Rogers Clark.
An aged gypsy named Samson Cooper, likely living near Dayton Ohio, was stabbed twice and killed beneath an electric lamp at Belle and Madison streets in Alton. The assailant, a Negro man, fled the scene after possibly taking several hundred dollars.
James F. Robers pleaded guilty in the United States district court at Springfield to robbing mail pouches at Springfield Junction on March 12. He received a two year sentence at Chester penitentiary. Robers says A F Bell, arrested in Denver and who confessed to the same robbery, was not engaged in the March offense.
John Huffman, a renowned St Louis turfman, was seriously hurt at Greenville while attempting to break a thoroughbred colt. The horse fell on him, breaking his leg in two places, and he lay trapped for over an hour until help arrived with water to treat the animal.
The steam yacht Roxina with owner John W. Gates and family aboard halted at Beardstown during a trip to the gulf. Built recently in Racine Wisconsin at a cost of $50,000, it is among the finest inland water crafts with a 400 horsepower triple engine.

Dyer, when apoplexy struck. Body to be sent to Washington for cremation. Beardslee joined the Navy in 1850, became rear admiral in 1896, retired in 1898, and was born in New York.
Carrollton Illinois November 12 the coroner T s jury conducted an inquest into the death of Chas Whartin Young who died from a blow. The inquiry extended from Monday forenoon until nine o'clock Tuesday night. The jury concluded the fatal blow was inflicted in a person Ga uninjured.
