Gomez withdraws from Cuban money plan amid officer opposition
Travana May 15 Gen Maximo Gomez informs Gen Brooke he will not name replacements for Cuban officers who refused to serve. He says a cabal among subordinate commanders opposes the partition plan and he cannot represent the army. Brooke plans to proceed alone, ordering privates and NCOs to meet at set places and dates, accompanied by company officers for identification. Gomez, favoring protection of privates, publishes a history to clarify his stance and contrast it with other Cuban leaders.
