The Bank of Elkhart in Elkhart Logan county failed after a bank examiner’s inquiry. Deposits total about 80 000 dollars and the exact shortage is undetermined. President J C Taylor and cashier Frank W Cotle say assets will cover liabilities and depositors will recover all funds. The bank was organized in 1891 under Illinois law by Gov Caele Dick Oglesby and John D Gillett. Creditors include the Gilletts, Oglesbys, farmers and cattle raisers.
Mrs M J Lancaster of Peoria was found acting queerly at a dry goods store and seized by police in Springfield. She carried 1845 in cash and claimed she threw away gold from a train window en route from Peoria to Springfield. She has wandered for 36 hours, slept in a cornfield, and is said to be wealthy but not violent. Ida Guthriel of Concord Morgan county tried to kill Mitchell Decker, firing at him at his home, grappled and disarmed, then leaped into a creek and was rescued. She later stabbed herself in the neck before officers searched her.
Benj Ellsworth of Woodstock fatally shoots his wife 42 and Amos W Anderson 70 in a prearranged plan with his son Earl A Ellsworth. The son, a prisoner, acted as spy and reported to his father before the triple tragedy ended with Ellsworth’s suicide. The victims include a wealthy boarder.
Mr and Mrs Carl J Schmidt of Alton marked their golden anniversary while Mr and Mrs Joseph Lummis celebrated theirs in Paloma. A Pana Business Men's association meeting approved a county fair again. Fire destroyed buildings on the west side of the Pocahontas square.
Elk Hart State Bank cashier Frank Cottle, tied to a $32,000 shortage alleged after the bank failed, shot himself as the bank closed. Officials denied a shortage, attributing Cottle’s illness to nervous prostration from the failure.

At a Springfield gathering of the state farmers institute directors the officers for the ensuing year were chosen. President is J. H. Coolidge of Galesburg, vice president H. G. Easterly of Carbondale, secretary and superintendent A. J. Bill of Bloomington, and treasurer A. P. Grout of Winchester. The next meeting location was not decided.
The American steamer Waesland from Liverpool to Philadelphia sank after a collision with the British vessel Harmonides off Holyhead in thick fog. All passengers and crew were saved except two lives, a steerage passenger named Dangerfield and a child Elsie Emmett. The Harmonides rescued the Waesland party and took them to Liverpool. the Waesland’s crew and passengers were praised for discipline and prompt evacuation.
Monongahela Pennsylvania March 7 a gas explosion in the Catesburg mine near here killed at least five workers and seriously injured two others. A lamp ignited released gas as miners entered a room entrance after pumps had been used to clear fire damp. The list of men believed trapped includes Robert Howey James Howey his son John Gelden Isaac Eastwood and William McFarland all reported married.
A Beatrice Nebr fire at 1 am Thursday caused about 10000 in damages in the business district and injured six firemen from live wire contact. Injured men include acting chief James Coon Geo Maxfield Herbert Palmer Guy Liddicott Harry Harper and Arthur Wolke. Coon suffered the worst shock but all are expected to recover.
