Newton R. Casey of Mound City a pioneer physician born 1826 in Jefferson County served as mayor 1859 to 1874 and held legislative seats. Bernard Taylor of Carbondale an aged respected resident. Downey Reeves 27 a Spanish-American War soldier of Harrisburg died of quick consumption buried with military honors. John Jones 70 Jefferson County pioneer. Mrs J J Plank Charleston longtime invalid.
A gust of wind toppled a baby carriage on the platform as a fast freight arrived, killing two infants aged one and three in Boone County. Mrs. Carl Detroue reportedly moved the carriage to the depot and entered the station moments before the tragedy.

New York June 13 A Harlem woman Miss Wertes aged 20 underwent a remarkable surgery for appendicitis performed by Dr Helmer. No knives medicines or poultices used. In eight minutes the doctor shifted the leg and twisted it to expel the appendix. Miss Wertes recovered quickly with no inconvenience.
Gen Charles King recently back from the Philippines arrived in Tacoma to visit his cousin Mrs Emmons. An informal reception preceded a speech to a serenading band when he collapsed from exhaustion and was carried indoors. A physician said no lasting effects are expected and King plans a few days rest before returning to San Francisco.
