An abstract of the national banks report shows Illinois banks excluding Chicago held an average reserve of 16.44 percent. Loans and discounts rose from 89,950,201 to 91,681,444 while gold coin grew to 3,156,905 and total specie to 5,606,312. Lawful money reserve stood at 7,917,572 and individual deposits climbed to 105,683,377, with several other figures cited.
Mrs Mary Benois died at Cahokia in St. Clair county in the house of her birth after ninety years. She left more than a thousand descendants and witnessed the first steamboat on the Mississippi. A granddaughter aged forty five died the day prior.
In Schuyler county barns on the farms of George Humphrey, Joseph Katgon, Philip Marshauser, Robert Bailey, Joseph Wysang and John Underwood were struck by lightning and burned, together with their sententa.
Marshalltown Iowa August 7 two engineers and many laborers were killed in a collision two miles west of Rhodes between a fast freight and a work train. Eight bodies were recovered by 3 pm. The freight met the work train on a reverse curve at full speed. The other fireman was saved by jumping. Seventy eight laborers were aboard the work train. A follow up statement from Chicago says both engineers died instantly and twenty others were injured. Conductor Craig had sent the work train west without orders, the telegraph operator had warned of the freight's movement, and officials voiced confusion over the circumstances. Relief trains aided the injured.
Des Moines Iowa report states thirteen killed and twenty five injured in the wreck near Rhodes. The deceased include engineers Brannan and Marskress, a fireman unnamed who died of injuries, and ten laborers. Ten of the worst injured arrived in Des Moines at 12:30 this morning and were taken to Mercy hospital.
The body of Daniel Sweeny a watchman for the Delaware Lackawanna and Western Co was found in a Hanover township field after leaving Bliss colliery. He fled a midnight shift followed by about twenty men who threatened him took refuge in a saloon waited then headed home. He was beaten to death by pick handles in an apparent ambush near the mining site.
A general rainfall across eastern Colorado caused cloudburst damage. The Colorado & Wyoming depot at Trinidad area was uprooted from its foundations and rail lines washed away. Manitou saw about 10,900 dollars in damage and near Pueblo estimates reach 25,000 dollars. Railroad traffic suffered but repairs would be swift. The rain benefited crops and alleviated water shortages in Denver and other cities for a time.
Rev. John W. Boyle aged 80 was killed in a Wednesday runaway near Guthrie Oklahoma. A native of Nobleston Pennsylvania he was a Cumberland Presbyterian minister and lawyer who served as land office receiver at Vermilion Dakota in 1864 and on the Dakota supreme bench under Johnson. He had prominent roles in Iowa Oklahoma and Texas.
Spokane reports crowds in Davenport as the Tracy body arrived for burial. Relics and bloodstained items were seized by mourners, with hair, strips of trousers, and cartridges shared or stolen. A Wilbur livery keeper identified Tracy as a man who visited his stable before the death.
In Portland Oregon on August 8, the $4 100 reward for outlaw Tracy's body faces delay due to multiple claimants. The body will be moved to Salem after the Davenport Washington inquest. Gov Gear supports state payment but awaits claimant agreement. court action may be invoked. McBride of Washington says he will follow Salem authorities on the reward decision.
Davenport Washington August 8 The coroner jury verdict states the body is that of Harry Tracy the escaped convict from the Oregon penitentiary. He died August 5 1902 at the ranch of Eddy in Lincoln County Washington from a self inflicted pistol shot after being wounded in the leg while fleeing officers and a pursuing posse. No one is blamed for the death and all efforts to capture him are praised as lawful.
