Wednesday's storm causes wide damage and safe shelters overflow
A Wednesday afternoon windstorm ranks as one of the hardest ever in the region. It brought a fierce gale with near tornado potential, forcing people to seek safety in cellars and sheds. Damage spread across trees, wheat, corn, and buildings, with outages and the destruction of stands at the baseball park. Power and mine stacks were toppled, and a worker died at a World’s Fair project site in St. Louis. The storm tracked from Minnesota to Tennessee, while showers helped corn crops. Local sports mix includes Moat Sluggers versus Glen Carbon Flyers 9 5, Troy beating Lemp’s 15 2, and Pin Oak Sparrows defeating B M Co 18 6, amid football-season displays.
