Dr J R Hobart, Charleston physician and prohibitionist, stricken with paralysis and unlikely to recover. Springfield bartenders form union, spurring demand for expert mixers at the state capital. Old Settlers Picnic held at New Douglas for Madison Bond and Montgomery counties. William Herzog and Joseph Osterkamp drowned while bathing in the Kaskaskia river near Keyesport.
H B Johnson, bookkeeper for Commercial Banking Co of Duluth, was arrested on a warrant for embezzling 45000. He admitted guilt saying the theft spanned eight months and used the funds for stock speculation. Bank president Leland said the bank cannot reopen and Johnson, 28, is the son of J P Johnson, a court clerk in St Louis County.
New Holland Ohio August 13 The Union bank faces a 100000 shortage after cashier Brown disappeared. He held funds for Perry township Pickaway county Marion township Fayette county the New Holland special school district and several lodges. The bank under Ohio law makes stockholders liable for double their shares. Brown was a prominent local figure and treasurer of the Masonic Temple association and other posts. He left a wife and two sons. Found in the safe were 458 in coin nearly 100000 in paper and 7000 in bonds.
Chicago August 13 a nine year old boy who calls himself Percy Bigelow says his father is a wealthy Fort Wayne resident was found in a Wabash freight yard box car in a famished state. He says two tramps kidnapped him while he played outside his home and threatened death if he cried out. Captors disappeared. police hold the boy and contact his father.
A $1,000,000 consolidation creates the National Car Line by merging Hammond Refrigerator City Refrigerator Omaha Packing and several car lines. The result places the trust in absolute control of refrigerator lines used to transport food meat and provisions from packing houses nationwide.
Myrtle Deviree, two years old and daughter of Bert Deviree, drank a cup of gasoline at Alton but was saved by physicians. In a separate incident, brakeman George Hedlee of the Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad died in a rear-end collision at Roeville Junction.
Gilbert Twigg 30, described as insane, opened fire on about 5000 fans at a Winfield band concert using a double barreled shotgun. He killed three, fatally injured three, and wounded about 20 others before a policeman killed him, then he shot himself. The panic halted when police confronted him. Twigg, once a miller and soldier in the Philippines, had been nicknamed Crazy Twigg.
Atlanta, Aug 14. Warden Allgood will be removed from his post at the state prison farm. The Mamie de Criss testimony prompted a legislature ban on whipping female convicts. Gov. Terrell asked for discharge and it will be granted. De Criss reportedly to be pardoned, with reforms likely to follow.
