A large crowd gathered Tuesday at City Hall to back an electric interurban extension toward Eroy from Maryville. Mayor Miller led the meeting with local committees from Highland and St Jacob outlining efforts to secure support and establish cooperation with East Side system officials. The talk touched on broader routes toward St Louis and Pittsburg with possible long distance interurban lines and through service ambitions.

The week saw cool nights and warm days with a maximum near 90. Rainfall was deficient and moisture is scarce, slowing fall plowing in many areas. Corn advanced but weather limited overall, while oats harvest continues with below average yield but good quality. Haying is fine, clover second cut strong, apples promising but crop short and dropping, potatoes damaged by drought yet overall average to good in many locales.

The Ladies Aid Society of the German Evangelical church meets next Thursday afternoon. The Troy Cemetery Mite Society will meet at Mrs. S. Kingston's home next Saturday at 2 o'clock. St. Pauls Lutheran church decided to cover the steeple with slate and repaint the edifice after a recent business meeting. The Oaklawn Cemetery Society will hold a pound social on J. N. McKee's lawn on Tuesday evening, August 11. All ladies are invited to contribute. The Gev an Evangelical Synod pastoral conference will convene at Edwardsville next Tuesday and Wednesday with Rev. Wm. Marten in attendance. Jarvis township Sunday school convention meets in this city tomorrow at the Presbyterian church with 10 o'clock session. Music will be provided by a double quartet including Mrs. Auwarter, Miss Sprick, Mrs. Gore, Miss Mosimann, R. L. Dawson, S. W. Rawson, Dr. F. E. Linder and Fred Mosimann. Van train strikes electric car at crossing. three dead
A Vandalia passenger train collided with an excursion electric car near Landsdowne last Sunday, killing engineer John Roy and fireman Vincent Higgins outright. Jacob Lenhardt and D. H. Beattie died instantly on the car. Nearly twenty others injured, many from St Louis. The crash wrecked both vehicles. fault attributed to both Vandalia Line and street car, with motorman and conductor blamed for racing the crossing. Roy had 26 years service. the accident occurred as the train, late and fast, struck the car squarely amidships.

Big fishing party at Horseshoe Lake draws locals
A large social gathering at Horseshoe Lake Thursday brought R. C. Morrins and family P. M. Davidson and wife Sam Davis and sister Miss Mary and Miss Rosa Riebold, joined by Mrs. Mollie Gaskill and son Earl of St. Louis and Myron G. Peera and Ernst Morriss and family from Collinsville. The group fished rode in a gasoline launch owned by Mr. Peers, enjoyed plentiful refreshments, and declared the day enjoyable.

Man Arrested for Burglary at Poor Farm Women’s Ward
Abe Owens, an Edwardsville man, was captured by Tom Moore and John Ost at the county poor farm while breaking into the women’s ward. A mob proposed lynching, but Owens was jailed after a preliminary hearing before Justice Breese Glass. He is held on burglary with attempt to rape, bail set at 500 dollars ahead of the October grand jury.

Dr F G Zenk Goes West to Manage Big Creek Mines
Dr F G Zenk leaves Monday for Idaho to take a branch manager post with Big Creek Gold Mining Co. He serves on the company's board and will look after local stockholders interests as he relocates west. Dr Schmidt of St Jacob rents Zenk's East End home to continue practice. Zenk has recovered from last year's tumor operation and accepts the new field away from medicine.

Report says sharp curves west of here will be removed to restore track to good condition.
