Rt Rev Henry Muehlsiepen vicar general of the St Louis archdiocese died Tuesday after an illness of eight months. Born in Germany September 4, 1834 he came to America in 1855 and was ordained in 1857. For thirty-five years he served as vicar general and wore the purple. Remains will be taken to Arcadia Missouri for interment after Friday funeral at the old St Louis cathedral.
St Louis obituary reports the death of Dr John H Zwarts a long time pharmacist aged 60 after a two week illness of malignant carbuncle. He was a native of Holland and came to St Louis with his parents when young and was active with the Catholic Knights of America and St Vincent de Paul society.
After a 52 hour siege, government forces captured the jail and capitol in Ciudad Bolivar. Gen Gomez confirmed the capitol’s fall to government troops, with Gen Nicolas Rolando and two lieutenants captured. The city lay wrecked, fire and debris everywhere, soldiers dead at the ramparts. The resistance was described as fierce and of a worthy cause.
