Mass in Sistine Chapel for Pope Leo Repose
In Rome on July 29 the first of three grand requiem masses for Pope Leo was held in the Sistine Chapel under the sacred college. Cardinals, the diplomatic corps, Roman nobility and other dignitaries attended as Michael Angelo’s frescoes glowed and the Dies Irae echoed from the matchless Sistine Choir. The ceremony featured a white catafalque, a triple crown, long robes, and a solemn elevation of the host, with uniformed guards, conclavists, and clergy moving in a painterly, ceremonial procession.
