Wheat Thieves Captured Near Belleville in Stage of Arrest
Belleville correpondent reports the capture of wheat thieves from Shiloh valley St Clair county. William Watkins resisted arrest near French village and was jailed. Other suspects Thomas Carrol Elijah Francis and Peter Gerhard were captured near Jerry Bennett’s home. Grain sacks horses harness wagons and gear were seized. Watkins once served as Mount Carmel marshal. Officers credit local effort and warn of ongoing gang activity in Southern Illinois.
