Correspondence between the United States and Spain on the Virginius affair continues with no settlement in sight. It is probable that indemnity claims will enter arbitration under the Fish-Polo protocol as the agreed means.
Tens of thousands witnessed the dedication ceremony and unveiling of the Lincoln statue on July 15 in Springfield. Governor Beveridge led the procession with Sherman and Grierson marching, Grant and Belknap in carriages, and a large crowd filling the cemetery for prayers, oration by Oglesby, and a patriotic poem by James Judson Lord. The article then critiques inflated industrial rents and calls for honest currency and fair distribution of labor profits.
De Mahler, Virginian traveler, has journeyed 40 000 miles since 1862, walking rather than riding. He recently passed Atlanta and moved toward Topeka, Kansas.
