PGE to Fort Nelson Feasibility Study Announced

Feasibility studies underway to consider extending the PGE route north to Fort Nelson to access mining and oil districts. Don Knight of the Department of Trade and Commerce leads the railroad study with a possible later link to Whitehorse and the White Pass and Yukon Railway at Whitehorse.

Elevator Under Way Near Chetwynd Village Limits

Construction starts on a grain and feed elevator on P.G.E. trackage east of Chetwynd Village built by O.G. Moore. It will operate with an adjacent large feed lot. Details on capacity and final size are not yet announced. Feeding is expected to rise with a packing plant at Prince George purchasing finished cattle.

Village Commission weighs sites for municipal building

The Village Commission studies options for a new municipal building to house offices and a library. Several sites are under consideration and no decision is made yet. A vote of ratepayers is needed before final plans can be completed.

Largest apartment block planned for fall start

Rondon Holdings of Edmonton will begin work on a two story 22 suite residential block on the Hart Highway south side, with 15 two bedroom and 6 one bedroom units. It will have full basement space and individual balconies, requiring sewer and water extensions and preliminary land levelling. Plans are with the Village Office.

Power Line Surveys Underway From Portage Mountain to Prince George

Engineering crews begin preliminary work on a high voltage line from Portage Mountain to connect with southward distribution systems. The route runs from Portage Mountain toward Pine Valley near Chetwynd, then west and south to Prince George.

Preliminary Work on Portage Power Plant

Contractors begin underground work at Portage Mountain site to create access tunnels ahead of main excavation for the new power plant. Crews are on site to start tunneling and preparatory work.

Store Extension Under Construction at Campbell’s Self Serve

An extension to the premises is under construction by Chetwynd Construction Ltd and is expected to be completed this Fall. The rear addition will add warehouse space and a meat department with more room for groceries and the clothing department.

Brewery for the Peace surveys possible sites in B C

Brewery interests are reported to be surveying communities in the Peace River region of British Columbia for a potential brewery. Possible locations include Fort St. John Dawson Creek or Chetwynd with no further particulars available.
