Lightning Ignites Multiple Forest Fires Near Fort St. John

Foresters report several lightning sparked fires around Hassler Creek Beatton Peaks and Pine Pass with areas up to 60 acres. About 58 crew members have been airlifted to containment while warnings urge extreme fire danger and cautions on campfires and cigarettes.

The Chetwynd Cubs win the $200 tournament on July 1 after sweeping Baytree for top league finish. Final 10 1 over Doe River with Gordy Doucette winning. Groundbirch tops Fort St John 6 4. Chetwynd crushes Groundbirch 18 4 with Jim Horswell the winning pitcher. Cubs rest next Sunday then resume July 14 at Dawson Creek.

Boy's Body Recovered From Pine River Drowning

The body of nine year old George Minaut was found on a Sand bar six miles downstream from Twidwell Bend after he was swept into the Pine River on June twenty second. His father and relatives located the body during a prolonged search as the coroner opens an inquiry into the accident.

A planned Pine River diversion and Hart Highway relocation about twenty miles west of Chetwynd aims to avoid unstable side hill mud banks. Project cost is estimated at 1 to 2 million dollars.
