Boiler Explosion Kills Two on C A & C Ry Near Fredericksburg
A boiler burst on the gravel train engine of the C A & C Ry near Fredericksburg on Tuesday forenoon killed engineer William Thornley and fireman Louis Brown instantly. Brakeman Harvey Shank was severely injured, found thrown into a swamp. The blast occurred 300 yards south of the tank house as the train returned to the gravel pit, likely caused by low water and hot flues. Thornley from Mt. Vernon belonged to the Wooster Commandery Knights Templar. Brown resided at Millersburg with wife and child. Shank lived in Orrville. The wreck blocked the line, residents aided the living and dead, and trains diverted via the B&O to Millersburg.
