An 1899 examination listed questions on physiology and anatomy, arithmetic, history and civil government, geography, and English grammar. It notes eighty applicants on May 6 at Wooster High School with queries about heart structure, blood composition, circulation, respiration, and related subjects, plus math and language tasks.
Dr Moore of Cincinnati preached two eloquent sermons at the Wooster Methodist church on the 12th anniversary. Morning text first Timothy 1:15 evening Hebrews 11:24. Subscriptions rose to repay church debt, over $1850 in morning, total reaching about $6000 toward a $4000 target and anticipated full payoff.
James Sweeney of Herkimer Missouri pled guilty before Judge Eason to burglarizing The Stores of Frank Bowers and Mr Herman of Canaan. He received two years for each indictment. B Sweeney stated James Sullivan, arrested with him at Blanefield, is not guilty.
Frank McKee son of shoemaker A P McKee of West Salem lost his left arm above the elbow while operating a lever press to start a saw at work. He served in Cuba with the Qo O during the 8th Regiment. President S S Seavel to speak at the National Educational Convention in Los Angeles July 11 to 14 with two Ohio speakers among the 150 on the program.
Fin Ebert, son of W F Ebert of Beat Larwill Street, was shot in the left cheek by Harry Draz on Wednesday evening in Smith's Ilvery barn office. Draz, using a 22 calibre revolver believed empty, discharged two remaining cartridges after several snaps, creating a severe facial wound. Dr C J Warner could not locate the ball due to swelling and left it for the present.
A Ohio Sunday School delegate recounts the Ninth International Sunday School Convention in Atlanta April 26 to 30, describes the journey from Cincinnati via Chattanooga, Lookout Mountain, and the Chickamauga battlefield, and reflects on Southern development, race relations, and postwar life through Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, and Kentucky.
A meeting of interested parties at Wooster National Bank formed an oil and gas company under New Jersey law with $100,000 capital. Subscriptions were taken, and a plan to drill and test a well was approved. Key attendees included A A Geitgey, Cunningham & Alexander, and local officials. The drilling site was set near Quinby Jones and sons land, about 3.5 miles uphill from Cedar Valley road, with A A Geitgey’s rig to drill day and night. The Tuscarawas Classis Reformed Church held an election of officers: President Rev Josiah Wolbach, stated clerk Rev Harry J. Lee Lake, treasurer E K Kremer, and cor secretary I N Barger. Ministers also visited the Experimental Station.
Clara Belle Marke the two month old daughter of Samuel O Marka of 104 West North Street died Monday morning. The funeral will be held from the family residence on Tuesday with interment at New Pittsburg.
A 13 year old boy, the son of Lee Gray tenant on Mrs. M. Mr. Yoder’s farm, died Wednesday from spinal meningitis after a brief illness of about two hours.
Post 3 appoints committees for Memorial Day activities with D 0 Curry as chairman and Rev F Ankel y as President of the Day. Roles include flowers by Ladies Relief Corps and transportation by O W McClure A Bramatat ter and A Boffenmyer.
John, a horse belonging to Ezra Dean Pinkerton, died about noon last Thursday near Fort Wayne Avenue. The mare was 17 years old and known in Wooster for her stubborn temperament, steadily resisting whippings. John often left his master’s side, tiring of standing, and tears are noted in the farewell. The horse was laid to rest on the Belra place southwest of Wooster.
John Kramer aged 65 dropped dead in his yard in Rewaburg in the early Thursday morning. He had endured ill health for some time and died at his home. A wife and five children survive him. The family previously resided in New Pittaburg.
