Freedom Seeker from Lexington Aims for Liberty and Love
A recollection from the New York Sun tells of a Lexington born enslaved man who escaped with 45 others in 1849 after being promised safe passage by Doyle for $100. He describes family freedom, peril on the route to the Ohio River, and capture, with a final return to Lexington after allies argued his case. He paid $987 to buy his freedom and marry his beloved, living forty-six years a free man.
