Chinch Bug Fight Prompts Fungus and Chemical Remedies

The Obie Experiment Station reports chinch bug outbreaks in parts of the state and tests a parasitic fungus, but dry conditions limit its effectiveness. A proposed remedy from 1904 uses hard soap, water, coal oil, and water to create an emulsion applied to corn before 10 a.m. or after 3 p.m. A small amount suffices per plant. Additional steps include trenching with coal tar and plowing to suppress bugs, as used by the Ohio Station.
