Charley Longley Credited for Vicksburg Memorial Park

Charles L Longley of Waterloo is credited with helping establish the Vicksburg National Military Park plan. The idea grew from Jowans who fought with Ulysses S Grant in the Civil War. Local veterans say Capt. John F Merry originated the project in 1899, with guidance from Union and Confederate groups. Longley, 82, who later managed the Boise U S Mint and served 16 years as Waterloo park commissioner, attended the Cedar Rapids reunion.
