Insurgent Western GOP Hints At Norris Backing
Washington October 19 The partisan insurgent bloc of western nonparty Republicans backs Senator Norris of Nebraska as a presidential nominee while seeking clearer views from Frank Lowden of Illinois on western issues. Senator Nye of North Dakota urges Lowden to clarify his stance on western interests and cautions that mere passage of the McNary Haugen bill won’t save agriculture. The group, including Borah of Idaho, Brookhart of Iowa, and Frazier of North Dakota, works on a new farm relief bill acceptable to Borah while growth in the bloc’s ranks remains limited amid cautious reactions from McMaster and others. The Norris camp faces uncertainty over candidate selection and unity.

Farm relief hopes shape Republican race chatter
In remarks attributed to Senator Norris and Senator Borah, McMaster says he would campaign for either if needed but stresses the electorate wants a candidate who can secure the nomination. Some group members privately hope Norris may bow out, clearing the way for Borah, contingent on a farm relief bill aligned with Idaho’s views.
