Vinton mourns Captain John W Barr born in Columbus Ohio March 12 1840 died at his home in Vinton. He served in the Civil War earning the rank of captain and fought in many battles. Barr twice served Benton County as sheriff and was highly respected. He was married twice and is survived by his widow and five children.

Deaths of Veterans in Winton and Big Grove Township
Jailed veteran Jaiset Weun, aged 95 and oldest in Winton, died after a long service life. Born in New York, he moved to Town after the war, lived on a Big Grove farm, then to Minton 28 years ago and spent last winter in Marshalltown soldier's home. He married his widow and left four children.
