Construction of a Hudson River vehicular tunnel
The Associated Press reports the start of ground breaking for a twin tunnel under the Hudson between New York and Jersey City. The $29.09 million project will be shared evenly by New York and New Jersey, with 18 months of shore-work before boring begins in 1924. Tolls for 20 years will follow ferry rates to fund the tube, after which it will be free. Four driveways per direction and a two foot sidewalk are planned, plus advanced ventilation shafts to remove carbon monoxide.
