New York October 11 Mme Sarah Bernhardt arrived yesterday on the Espagne after a three year absence from America. She was warmly welcomed as four French sailors carried her down the gangplank while society girls scattered flowers. After a short rest she took the train for Montreal and said she would not present her cathedrals in the United States to avoid disturbing a neutral country.

In Transylvania Austro German troops advance against Roumanians, while Italian and French operations report gains elsewhere. German forces cut off near Vermandovillers as Romanian defense weakens.

Waverly Oct 11 Special Mrs Kitty Q B Miller widow of Charles W Miller once publisher of the Democrat of Big City and former speaker of the Iowa house was found dead today about noon in her home. Body at foot of stairs with neck broken a coroner's inquest is held. She was about 40 years old and may have died on the anniversary of her husband’s death.
London reports German losses from the war start through September total 3,558,018. The British compilation notes September casualties at 179,083, raising the overall figure from the German source to 8,338,018.
