Traer selects mayor after nine tries amid cottage-council stalemate
Traer Iowa October 8 Peter Whannel will succeed J H W Marsun as mayor after the city council, unable to fill the post, held two citizens caucuses. Whannel initially declined but accepted after pressure from supporters. The town faced repeated refusals and even jokes about hiring a Chicago paper to find a mayor. Letters from across states poured in from hopeful applicants, some describing varied trades and skills, all seeking the public duty.
