A letter from Dr. Elmer J. Dunkelberg, stationed with the 127th Machine Gun battalion at Deming New Mexico, praises the Y M C A in the camp as an absolute necessity. He notes the Y M C A improves soldiers health and morals, hosts films and music, and provides writing tables for many men each night.
Fort Dodge Iowa November 16 The dangers of ocean travel are described in a letter from Senator W S Kenyon written aboard a ship about 100 miles from Liverpool on October 27 The letter was mailed in the reader notes section of the paper.
The Northeastern Iowa Chiropractors Association met in Waverly with large attendance. Vice president Dr. B W Jacoby of Waterloo chaired due to president Dr. B C Fortin of Cresco being absent. Speakers included Dr. Vogel Prof Oscar Hoy Dr R V Blean and Dr W J Roth.
Waterloo post office set a new low for parcel post as more than 60 Christmas boxes for soldiers in the trenches were handled. From now until December 5 packages weighing seven to 30 pounds go via Hoboken to the War Department. Postmaster M. H. Kelly praised a flood of mail from Waterloo and Black Hawk County and noted many gifts from strangers for soldiers without relatives, with only season greeting cards allowed in the boxes.
