A dispatch from France reports American soldiers killed or wounded in recent German shelling of American trenches. An ambush on the western front killed and wounded German troops, with Americans suffering no casualties in one patrol trap. Artillery fire is heavy on both sides as shelling persists.
Revised official casualty report from Pershing updates the Nov 3 German raid on American trenches. Three killed, eleven wounded, eleven missing. First Lieut. William H. McLaughlin and five privates added to wounded. Private Dewey D. Kern removed from missing. Grigsby and others reported as wounded. Also notes the wounded are doing well and several names corrected.
Private Dewey D. Kern of Collins was not captured or missing in the German trench raid, but is safe with his regiment, per a war department Adjutant General message to his mother Eva Tilton. Kern had been listed as missing earlier, along with Private Merle D. Hay of Glidden, who was killed.
American officers praise rapid gains in trench warfare skills as infantry learn patrol techniques and artillery crews improve at observing and locating enemy batteries by sound. Heavy guns duel at long range while lighter pieces target closer lines in ongoing combat.
Rio Janeiro officials authorize a state of siege where needed to cancel German public works contracts, annul prejudicial contracts, prohibit international trade, intern enemy suspects, and revise land concessions to colonists as amended by the senate. The chamber of deputies adopted the bill for reprisals against Germans.

New York announces roughly 13 million dollars raised for the YMC A war work fund, over a third of the 35 million goal. Eastern department leads with more than 5 million, central at about 4.9 million. New York state contributions total 1.912 million, Ohio 1.30 million, and Wisconsin 1.70 million.
Senator William S Kenyon of Iowa and Senator John D Kendrick of Wyoming arrived at Pershing headquarters in the American front area. They dined with General Pershing, inspected troops, and planned tours of the division base reserve training camp and town housing American soldiers to observe training after the trenches.
Stockholm dispatches report Petrograd under Bolshevik control amid fighting in Moscow and Kiev. Rumors say Kerensky contested, Korniloff besieged Kremlin, and Siberia proclaims independence. Provisional government, naval forces, and Bolshevik troops featured. food measures planned in Petrograd.

British defense at Passchendaele held firm after a brutal German assault led by Crown Prince Rupprecht. German infantry attacked crest positions north of the hamlet with heavy artillery support and a bayonet rush. Intense British artillery fire and fierce close quarters fighting repelled the Germans, leaving many dead before the British lines.
