Charles E. Swanson of Council Bluffs appointed by Judge R. W. Hasner to serve as outside special prosecutor before the September grand jury in Black Hawk County. The case centers on Roscoe T. Flack and officers Lloyd Halleck and Harry P. Mason amid an Oct 3 highway shooting in Black Hawk County.
The Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and Order of Railway Conductors filed a joint wage increase request for all railroads west of the Mississippi. Leader William G. Lee said the proposal would raise wages about 19 percent from the current scale, with negotiations to follow before the March 1 expiration of the existing agreement. East and south of the Mississippi saw a 7.5 percent increase last year.
Glasgow Kentucky reports a murder plot suspected after a family fire killed four. Mr and Mrs Narly Nichols and two of their children Earline and Windall died, shot before the blaze. Two other Nichols children at boarding school survive. A shotgun and an empty gas tank were found near the scene.
Quiet prevailed in Ray and Lafayette counties after open violence Monday when 700 regular union miners blocked 250 independent workers from entering their jobs. Fist fights and clubbing were reported. Independent workers earned $58 per day, while regular union men were on strike for $7.50.
Dessau Germany November 1 1931 The famed Junkers stunt airplane pilot Plauth died when his craft crashed at about 3100 feet during a public flight. The accident ends the career of a renowned show pilot.

Lars Larson and Ella McDonald of Marshalltown were licensed to wed in Des Moines. Their car and a trolley clashed in the eastern city area injuring McDonald with a bruised chest and Menter with fractured ribs. Larson had minor bruises. They sought medical aid then proceeded to the courthouse for the ceremony.
New York reports Mrs Frances Wilson Graysons amphibian The Dawn may fly the Atlantic this year with Clarence Chamberlin or Thea Rasche as co pilot. Rasche published a telegram offering to join, while The Dawn prepared for a test flight with Chamberlin piloting.
Henry Motty a former sailor reportedly confessed to police that he killed his wife and sister in law in New Orleans last Wednesday. Captured at Cutoff Louisiana Motty had claimed a Norwegian sailor did the crimes. he admitted being present. Jealousy over alleged infidelity was cited as the motive to District Attorney Eugene Stanley.
Senator Arthur Capper of Kansas renewed his endorsement of Senator Charles Curtis of Kansas for the Republican presidential nomination. He said Kansas Republicans will support Curtis and noted Curtis is well liked in Washington and likely to gain strength in the middle and western states.

Two unmasked bandits robbed the Herrin Athletes club last night. Patrons were held at gunpoint as about £3000 in cash vanished from the register and card tables. Local police began an inquiry into the nighttime raid at the clubroom.
In Chicago on November 1, forecasts call for mild and cloudy conditions in the Mississippi Valley. Despite snow in Montana, Wyoming and Idaho, Prof. Henry J. Cox, chief Chicago meteorologist, said mild weather is expected to continue.

Carl West Herman Smittie and Olive West were jailed on assault charges after a dispute with Frisco Egelenstein his wife and Egelenstein's 17 year old daughter. Eyelenstein attacked Olive with a knife and died. A coroner's jury ruled justifiable homicide regarding Olive West.
Cardinal Dougherty of Philadelphia who served with Archbishop Jeremiah J. Harty in the Philippines will be unable to attend the funeral. The pontifical mass will be solemnized by Archbishop J. J. Keane of Dubuque assisted by Rev. W. J. Grace and Rev. P. F. Gannon in Omaha.
In Carbondale Illinois an estimated 40 000 to 50 000 people attended a Halloween parade and Mardi Gras celebration. State traffic officers say the event featured more than 100 floats and hundreds of masked marchers, the largest in years.

Washington reports the U S Chamber of Commerce urged the House Ways and Means Committee to cut federal taxes by 400 million dollars. It called for reducing the corporate rate from 13 to 10 percent, wiping excise taxes on autos and admissions, and eliminating the estates tax, challenging President Coolidge and Secretary Mellon who favored a smaller corporate cut and keeping excises.
A 12 year old boy accidentally struck his father in the neck with a golf club during a first lesson at Fox Hills Country Club in Los Angeles. Ben H. Wesley died from the injury in what authorities termed a tragic accident.
