Horses and Mules Could Turn Grain Surplus to Profit

Elkader Iowa May 25. A decline in horses and mules in seven years fueled crop surpluses and low prices says L A Andrew state superintendent of banking in a district bankers meeting. Census shows 3,189,444 fewer equines since 1920 and over 1.5 million fewer in industrial use since 1910. Andrew argues reduced animal use shifts grain into food, creating fourteen million acres of food competing with farm products, and cites losses of 48,898,000 bushels of corn and 169,926,000 bushels of oats as markets disappear.
