Italians smash a five mile front from Castagnevizza to the Adriatic and take about 3,000 prisoners as they press toward Trieste. The drive includes 130 aircraft and helps explain why Austrian forces were unable to halt the progress. Nearly 10,000 prisoners are reported in the day’s action.
Washington May 24 Provost Marshal General Crowder emphasizes that all men aged 21 to 31 are required to register for military service unless already in the regular army navy national guard or federal service or naval reserve. Convicts and alien enemies must register but registration is not drafting. Exemption claims may be filed as selection proceeds by a fairest possible system.
Washington states that US citizens may not join the Stockholm conference with government consent. Penalties include up to three years in prison and a $5,000 fine. The State Department labels the event German propaganda and warns individuals against participation.

Dublin May 24 Sinn Fein unanimously resolves to decline participation in any conference called by the English government to settle the Irish question until four conditions are met. They demand independence terms, a public pledge from England to US and European powers to ratify majority decisions, a convention elected by adult suffrage, and proper prisoner-of-war treatment for Irish detainees from the recent revolution.

London and New York dispatches report the British transport Transylvania torpedoed in the Mediterranean on May 4 with 413 killed or missing. The 14,315 ton Anchor Line liner carried troops and had served since 1915, with Captain Bruell among the lost. Survivors were taken to Savona and later departed for an unnamed destination amid cheering crowds.
Dallas, May 24. The general assembly of the Presbyterian church in the United States of America north branch voted unanimously to hold the next assembly in Columbus. The decision comes as the church plans its schedule for the coming year.
London May 24 Britons observe a national food pledge day in response to a proclamation urging economy and frugality. Two million have signed. meetings at the royal exchange and guildhall encourage voluntary rationing. Factories and schools cease work at noon to sign the pledge as three million helpers drive the campaign.

Frank Vanderlip of National City Bank says both large and small investments come in. plan for $10 certificates to aid small investors via employers is expected to be authorized by Washington. Chicago launches a sales blitz with 500 bond salesmen targeting offices, hotels, and stores. churches to receive bond certificates for Sunday use. The American army engineers arrived in England May 24 and met with officials for conferences on specialized duties. Over a thousand Americans are assembled in Pettatna.
Foreign Minister Nilo Pecanha said Brazil need not declare war on Germany, arguing events forced a de facto state of war.
