Iowa tenant farmers need aid says sociologist
Des Moines May 17. Low standards of living and poverty exist among Iowa tenant farmers according to Ruth Haefner field organizer for the Iowa child welfare research station. She told a conference that many mothers cannot send children to school or clinics due to lack of clothing and that banks control many farms. She cited annual migratory labor and needs for medical, nursing and educational services in rural areas. City social workers are not welcomed due to farmer independence, and uplift programs must respect local conditions. Sympathy and understanding of rural people are vital to effective social work.
