Washington May 18 – President Coolidge praised the medical profession for its role in human welfare and urged a future of right living and thought. He warned that despite progress, crime and wars persist and society must align actions with knowledge to improve health, morals, and public life.
John Patrick Mulvey 61 died of heart disease at work at W.C.F. and N hops on Broadway. Funeral will be at 9 pm Thursday at St. Joseph's Church with Rev. Father Ed Slattery officiating. Burial at Catholic Cemetery in Wavert. Born October 12, 1865 in Princeton New Jersey, he moved to Iowa in 1896 and later to Fort. Surviving are wife and children Elmer J Clare Isabelle Mulvey John D Mulvey Alfred G Mulvey Ethan Allen and three grandchildren.
Funeral services for W. W. Johnson, who died yesterday at the Old People's Home in Cedar Falls, will be held at 10 a.m. in the home chapel. Burial will follow in Evangelical cemetery at Cedar Falls. Johnson, born in Springfield Massachusetts in 1841, moved west as a young man and lived near Waterloo several years. Surviving are a daughter Mrs. Ray E B Wagner of Waterloo, a son Glanville in the United States Army, and two brothers C. G. Johnson of Pasadena California and Roger Johnson of Racine Wisconsin.
An abandoned baby girl about 10 days old was found in a car parked in front of the public garage in Charles City Iowa. The child had been placed in the car after it had been run out of the garage. Its cries attracted pedestrians. no clues to its parents have been found.
The Associated Press provided a set of questions and answers from the Iowa State Historical Society. It asks who in Marshalltown gained national fame, which Town location could be chosen as the president’s stammer home, how Iowa municipalities are classified, which communistic group resides in an Iowa county, and when the State Historical Society was founded.
Des Moines reports show Iowa corn planting at 25 percent statewide with wide regional variation from over 90 percent in Mills and Harrison counties to none in several southern east and northeast districts. Frosts May 12 reduced oats prospects and seed corn shortages appear in limited areas while oats, winter wheat and tree fruits show improvement and strawberries face frost damage but optimistic outlook persists.

Los Angeles May 18 A maze of evidence linked the deaths of broker George E. Powell and his secretary Miss Margie Pike to a dictagraph spying scheme aimed at Julian Petroleum. District Attorney Harold Davis said the deaths may be murder or suicide tied to unrequited infatuation and outside influence. Investigations into Julian Petroleum’s affairs continue as Powell’s receiving apparatus was found in a vacant room of the attorney offices building. Pike had been taking shorthand notes of conversations heard over the device.
After the state argued insanity of convenience, defense counsel urged jurors to weigh evidence on whether Mrs. Maharras was legally insane the morning of Aug 7, 1924. The defendant, accompanied by family, sat emotionless as testimony described acts cited as signs of insanity and the trial moved toward verdict.
In Des Moines on May 18 a man believed to be Arch Jones was killed when a Rock Island passenger train ran over him in the railroad yards. Engineer H. T. McKnight said the man lay across the tracks asleep as the train approached, papers in his coat identifying him.
Y W C A workers will meet tomorrow noon at association rooms to raise the full $135,000 debt and outline plans to secure the objective within 30 days. The gathering includes both men and women on the committee aiming to free the Y W C A from debt.
Hardiman secures garage permit at 1125 Ackermant for 100 dollars. Mrs. George Tulp applies for garage at 410 Jefferson for 200 dollars. Mrs. H. W. Steffen files garage at 1820 South for 100 dollars. L L Smith obtains garage permit for Allen Memorial hospital site for 100 dollars. L. Glaza seeks tank permit at 11 Commercial.
A marriage license is recorded for Touls W Burger and Jasup with listed locations Victoria Weber and Gilbertville. The brief notice confirms a union under local civil records. No further details are provided in the readable text.
Keokuk May 18. The Hancock County courthouse at Carthage Illinois was struck again by lightning in a severe storm, the third strike in two years. Damage about 500 dollars, roof dome struck, tiles driven through, about 60 holes in the roof.
Miss Herman of Aurora Illinois, age 26, was found dead in her room at the Cleveland hotel Osage, May 18. Two empty chloroform bottles were found. She had attempted to obtain morphine yesterday and bought chloroform at separate drug stores. The coroner ruled death an overdose with no inquest planned. Charles Miller and Margaret Miller were telegraphed about the body’s disposition. Frank Wewerka reported the death. the sheriff’s office notified.
Des Moines May 18 Everett Pratt and his wife, foster parents of Roberta Jane Pratt, have returned home. Pratt would only say he may issue a statement later. Roberta remains quarantined with the measles at Louris Hall in New Canaan, Conn., and will be turned over to local juvenile authorities when quarantine lifts.
Cedar Falls May 18 Windows on north sides of homes farms and the consolidated school at New Hartford suffered extensive glass breakage from a May hailstorm driven by strong winds. Trees were stripped of leaves and vegetation damaged. Farmers visiting the scene for glass putty and implements included George Newgaard Carl Schneiss and Nels Rasmussen. Hail remained on the ground into morning in various locations.
Hail fell in abundance here early today causing damage to property and breaking scores of window panes. The hail stones were as large as eggs. Nearly all the windows were broken at the farm home of Joe Hagen and at the home of J C Evatty. Screens in windows and doors were ripped. Street lamps were shattered and many windows broken. The hail was followed by a heavy rainstorm flooding sewers and cellars.
Artell Newton aged about 28 of 1949 Mulberry Street remains in critical condition at St Francis Hospital after a Sunday evening automobile accident on Lower Lafayette Road. Newton had skull fractures and had not regained consciousness 60 hours post collision. He was riding with Otto Wilts of 1950 Franklin Street when their car left the ditch.
J Torrance, a resident of Western Old People's Home for three years, died at 1:30 am in Cedar Falls. Born December 13, 1843, in Indiana, he passed away from infirmities of age.
Tuesday at 1:35 p.m. a fire in a bed and rug at 315 Second Street East caused unknown damage of $10. Wednesday at 1:35 a.m. a short circuit in wiring sparked a fire at 631 Third Avenue West with $100 damage. Advertisement for Herman C. Milla offers insurance at phone 2404.

Des Moines boy James Pryor, 19, brought from St. Joseph Missouri to Sioux City, is free today and likely to avoid trial on a murder charge. Authorities report Rollie Blackburn and Frank Harris, alleged principals in the killing of Charles Launsbach, are serving long Colorado sentences and thus unavailable for transfer.
Emmetsburg delegates from bankers farmers merchants and real estate men perfected a northwest Iowa real estate board. President H M Helgen of Emmetsburg was named to lead the new group which plans a campaign to advertise Iowa with emphasis on the northwest. A second meeting is set for May 31.
In Des Moines on May 18 Dr. J. B. Harmon a local dentist attempted suicide at home. His wife found him hanging by a belt from a pipe in the furnace room. Scotty Russell East High School athletic director rescued him with first aid.

Iowa dairy farmers hope to learn cheese secrets from Europe. Prof. E F Goss of Iowa State College will sail June 18 for France Italy Switzerland Holland Denmark and Germany to bring back knowledge on imported cheeses.
W Fiske Marshall of the H and M Chevrolet company purchases the two story colonial residence at Kingbard avenue and Clough street from Fred Wray for 9000 dollars. Marshall will occupy the house as his home.
The Interstate Commerce Commission set a tentative valuation of 237,050,000 dollars on Missouri Pacific Railroad property as of June 30, 1918, announced from Washington. The report notes the year and total valuation for the carrier’s assets.

Davenport May 18. Mrs John Fox Lake urged youth to join and work in Iowa Federation of Women's Clubs at the seventeenth biennial convention. She outlined goals including sustaining finances, keeping the endowment fund open, and promoting extension work for junior members across districts and state committees.
Des Moines May 18 Memphis Tenn selected as the net convention city for the national conference of social work. The body will hold a final luncheon a few divisional meetings and disband today after a hectic session in which race prejudice prompted spirited remarks and a reprimand to the executive committee.

Shanghai May 18. The Japanese destroyer Momo carrying Consul General Yadaito Pankow shelled a northern Chinese troop position at Chinkiang after Chinese fire wounded several officers. Momo weighed anchor at 1 30 this morning and later departed for Hankow. Four northern warships bombarded Woosung forts and Cantonese ships. Nine Cantonese soldiers were killed and 23 wounded. General Sun Chaun Fang’s forces held Yangchow as Chiang Kai Shek arrived at Lunghwa military HQ with aides and guards.
The three Shelton brothers Carl Bernie and BHarl were brought from Leavenworth to Springfield and lodged in Sangamon County jail pending a new trial for the Collinsville mail robbery. They are to appear before Judge Twitzhenry soon to fix bail.

Rev. A B Leamer of Des Moines was re elected president of the Iowa synod of the United Lutheran church at its morning session in Cedar Rapids. New officers named include Parker secretary Lesher statistical secretary Berger treasurer and Weertz historian. A Luther league conference was led by Amos J Traver and a robed choir from First English Lutheran church will perform a concert tonight.
Grief-stricken parents rushed to the school and hospitals after two blasts. Miss Sterling, a first grade teacher, escaped the wreckage and described children hurled against walls or through windows. Miss Evelyn Paul said the explosion caused walls and ceilings to collapse and many students remained inside.
