Pasturing Sweet Clover Advised After First Year

Pioneer Cow Test association members seeded approximately 65 acres of sweet clover this spring with oats and plan to pasture it after it reaches two to three inches tall next spring. Pasturing this fall could kill the plants, and the tester notes sweet clover can withstand heavier grazing than bluegrass once established. The report also notes interest in growing soybeans as a protein feed, with Mack Eyebrow soybeans favored for seed. Cattle production data show 369 cows averaging 80.4 pounds of butterfat, with costs and returns outlined for milk and fat.
