Clifford Hallowell Returns From Wyoming Elk Reserve Mission

Clifford Hallowell has returned from Yacuson Hole Wyoming after weeks abroad. He worked under the Izaak Walton League of America to purchase land for a conservation reservation to protect the remaining elk herds. He arrived about ten days early and reports success and interesting experiences. A local Ikes social will honor him, where he will recount his trip.

Navy Recruiting Station Moves to Fourth Street East

The naval recruiting station is moved from 410 Lafayette to 304 1 2 Fourth Street East. It has operated near the army office for over a year. H. S. Hatton remains in charge. The new quarters are more central and Hatton expects increased enlistments.

J S Tuthill was elected and named a member of the Waterloo Social Welfare League board at a monthly meeting. Vacancies will be filled at the June board meeting due to resignations of Jacob Levingston. Reports from April were by Elena Hughes, superintendent, and Ruby Imler. Dog licenses due by Friday with possible publication fees for delinquent lists. Fire prevention talk given by Arthur Kingman, assistant chief, at Rotary noon. An earthquake near Cairo caused brief shaking with no damage.

Berlin reports show Field Marshal von Hindenburg gaining broad public approval after his inaugural as president of the German republic. Memphis Tennessee May 13 reports that no bodies remain in the wreck of the government steamer Norman located about 55 feet below the Mississippi. Army engineers direct salvage operations as a systematic search of the river banks proceeds. Earl Simonson, a fireman, was recovered a few hundred yards downstream. Farmer Ended His Life by Hanging Near Waterloo

Jono Besh, driven by ill health, hanged himself in the mow of a barn on his Mt. Vernon township farm nine miles from Waterloo around noon. His two sons found the body. He had recently returned from California after spending winter there hoping to improve health. The family includes a widow and a daughter, no sons surviving.

Eighty Japanese Language Schools Closed in Honolulu

Eighty Japanese language schools in Honolulu were closed after an injunction blocked enforcement of a law requiring a $1 annual fee per pupil. The amendment also set a $25 penalty for noncompliance, and the schools were deemed nonfunctional by the school department. The amendment uniquely barred injunction proceedings.

Autoists Pay Fines In Municipal Court

Two speeders paid fines of 10 dollars each and two motorists forfeited equal sums for exceeding the limit. Three other car owners were assessed 3.50 and costs for traffic law violations. One defendant pleaded not guilty to reckless driving and his trial was set for tomorrow. Also, Swisher Savings Bank of Swisher, Iowa, to reopen after over two months closed, issuing certificates of deposit to claimants in four installments.
