Michigan Pigeons Bring Shelby Fame in 1870s Nesting
Shelby, Michigan, recalls wild passenger pigeons that swarmed the area in the 1870s. A. S. Souter recounts a 1874 nesting near Shelby, with crowds of birds darkening the sky from morning to afternoon. Hunters used nets and stool pigeons to trap thousands, shipping live birds to New York and dressing others in barrels, with local profits fueling farms and agents. The flocks disappeared by 1879, and today museums pay high sums for specimens. The tale closes with notes on dwindling doves and references to royal pranks and salaries in a digressive aside.
