Poultry Raisers Back Higher Tariff on Imports
Des Moines drive supports raising the tariff on dressed poultry to curb imports. Iowa farmers rely on poultry for income, with six cents per pound duty and containers, but insiders say it won’t stop thousands of cases monthly from London Hamburg Copenhagen Antwerp and later Argentina. Dr. C L Holmes of Town State College cites 1927 farm income data showing poultry at 2.1 percent of income and eggs at 4 percent, with 1924-1937 trends. J B Mitchell of J H White Co Chicago argues large cold stored stocks exist, costing 15-60 percent above domestic price, creating inevitability of losses if imports surge, urging fair profit for handlers.
