Des Moines reports Iowa banks hold more than 544.8 million dollars in deposits as of March 4 1918, a gain of 117.5 million from a year earlier. The state shows a surplus rise to about 2.0 million after tax, with 55 more banks since last year and high average reserves.
Rainbow men receive vermin proofing for 4,000 garments to aid soldiers at front. Des Moines volunteers, Governor Harding backing, and Mrs. Eastman from Iowa City organized cloth purchases and Mothers' club workers prepared 2,000 suits and additional pieces for the Rainbow division.
A well driller in Eldridge, Scott County, Iowa, reports traces of natural gas at seven feet depth, enabling a home to be heated and lit. Shenandoah IA March 27 attorneys for Hi Paich Bluff man contest Fremont county hold on two cars seized with loads of booze after they stuck in a mudhole near Farragut. They claim officials acted beyond authority and Paich is not a habitual bootlegger, seeking release for the cars amid bootlegging charges and nuisance concerns. Hearing held at Clarinda. Page county involved as Cadillac cars seized after a booze wheel near Norwich.
In Humboldt County a trunk from Minneapolis containing twelve quart bottles of whisky was opened after arrival. Thief substituted coffee for the liquor, leaving only a remnant of the original contents. County Attorney H DeGrotte has collected hundreds in fines from thirsty travelers since January.
Local druggists advertise a new North Carolina made inhaled and skin-absorbed treatment. VapoRub is sold in 95c jars with a 30 day trial, claimed to relieve croup within 15 minutes and ease bronchial symptoms overnight. The ad promotes Vick’s Vaporub, the pine-barren cure offered with a home trial and inhaled vapors.

There will be a 11 per cent Increase In hog production in low this year according to the reports of the dairy and fond inspectors who have been co operating with county agents over the state in getting data on agricul tural and dive stock work. The agents have also been helping in lo cating seed corn and in inspecting, worn thought not up to standard. Wuirmors are making liberal offers of old seed corn to their neighbors, the inspectors report. Many of them are offering their 1916 seed torn to their neighbors ,at from £ 1.60 to £ 2.00 per bushel. This is in direct contrast to sane seed concerns which have been asking high prices for seed corn. One farmer in northern Iowa, however, yesterday reported to the authorities, who has 1,000 bush els of spring wheat and declares he will not sel it until he receives $5 per bushel for it. The seed wheat purchased in Minneapolis was secur ed at $2.50 per bushel until the sup ply was exhausted. Stock buyers in many parts of the state are turning back piggy sows and refusing to shun them. But com paratively few piggy sows are being sent to market, the inspectors re port. The packing houses are also discouraging the marketing of sows. It was reported earlier in the spring that farmers were growing discouraged with the stock business because of inability to get cars to ship their stock in and were quitting the business. Commissioner Barney says the not the case in districts visited by the inspectors.
Bronx City March 27 W. Martin of a local packing firm was awarded a divorce shortly after advertising for his wife and seeking to locate her. The next day he was arrested on a warrant from Fort Dodge for wife desertion. He was taken to Fort Dodge, where he met his ex wife, they reconciled and married. Charges were dropped.
Town elections produced varied results with incumbents and new names across several locales. In Council Bluffs Lew Gwimuehlen won the mayoralty over Langstrom. Meokuk-Ltd softens retained the mayoralty. Nicky re-elected councilman. Hemmy elected commissioner. Audubon returns list Graham as mayor Weaver assessor Wilson treasurer. Moulton elected Ly Bovard mayor for a fifth term. Bronx City Rev Short won over Andrews.
