Burniss E Dick of Independence and son of 4H member Burniss FB Dick died in a base hospital in France from wounds received in battle. Blood poisoning caused his death. He enlisted at Winterset in the 168th infantry Co A. The last word was he was recovering from mumps in a hospital before being sent to the firing line. A service flag with 27 stars was present at the Congregational church during Sunday school. Rev. W. J. Suckow led the service with addresses by M. J. Yoran and A. M. Cloud, flag presented by H. W. New Flag for Iowa Planned for Official Adoption
The Iowa legislature will be asked to officially adopt a flag commemorating Iowa’s French territorial origins. Designed by Mrs Dixie Cornell Gebhardt, the flag features three vertical blue white red stripes with the state seal eagle and motto, and the word Iowa in red. Nine flags were funded by DAR and SAR members, eight regimental banners and one shown to Gov Harding, with efforts to place flags in homes statewide.
