Opening Like Freighters And Ling Traffic Ahead
Reports from the Lake Superior iron ore fields and from grain and coal indicate a busy Great Lakes opening. Shippers expect a strong season as ore stockpiles shrink and demand grows for vessel bottoms to carry grain from Duluth Superior and Port Arthur Fort William elevators. Elevators at Chicago Fort William Port Arthur Duluth and Superior hold about 30 million bushels, with grain shipments to follow ore movement. Coal stocks on docks total about 4.4 million tons with 2.8 million contracted, leaving 1.6 million tons open for later deals.
