Life Insurance Land Increases from One Twenty-Fifth to Two Hundred an Acre
W H Hodge of Abilene Kansas spoke at the Rotary lunch and toured Waterloo plants after learning a Des Moines sale of 435 acres at 200 dollars per acre. The land had been bought in 1855 for 1 25 an acre and deeded to Mrs Hodge as life insurance. The sale left the estate with a large value and the two brothers divided the proceeds. Hodge, secretary of the Western Retail Implement Vehicle and Hardware association, praised Waterloo’s manufacturing district and noted farmers’ optimism and demand for the best machinery amid high material costs. The sale was finalized in Des Moines with proceeds amounting to 43 500 in his pocket.

Speculators hold 600,000 to 1,200,000 bushels, the car shortage hinders shipments, and the new crop may ease prices only gradually. Home gardens and garden clubs are urged as the best remedy to high living costs. Waterloo notes urge residents to support home gardening efforts.
